I love writing articles, because it’s both fun and profitable. Beginning writers however tend to be impatient. They want to make top money immediately. If you’re in this situation, be aware that your impatience can derail your career.
Most of the beginning article writers’ impatience arises because they don’t understand the difference between a beginner, and a professional writer — they want to make a top income instantly. That won’t happen.
There’s a big disparity between beginners and professionals.
Recently, I said:
There’s a huge disparity in income between “article writers” and professional writers who write articles. The “article writers” provide content as a commodity, at anywhere from $5 to $50 per article. Professional writers write quality articles for a specific venue, targeting the venue’s audience. They’re paid accordingly, and aim for a dollar a word.
Here’s the thing: each and every professional writer started as a beginner. There’s no way around that. Experience makes you a professional. So, as a beginner, your only goal is to get that experience.
That said, I’m wary of anyone who says that they have “five years of experience at _______ (whatever.)” That can mean five years of experience, or one year of experience, repeated five times. You should be actively learning while you’re gaining experience.
Once you’ve learned something — PRACTICE. Please don’t be the person who says: “I know how to do that”. Knowing how to do something is all very well, practicing it is something else. You only become good at something when you practice. Once you’re good at something, not only will you know it, everyone else will know it too, and they won’t hesitate to pay you well, because you’re worth it.
How to get started writing articles for pay
Everyone starts as a beginner. When you’re just starting out, take whatever money you’re offered. There’s no point in gnashing your teeth, and wondering why you’re not being paid more.
The value of the experience you gain as a beginner will stand you in good stead. Your experience will show you when you’re worth more, and when that happens you will naturally gravitate to the venues which pay more — these venues never consider beginning writers.
I advise my own writing students to start at the outsourcing sites. The experience you gain there is so valuable you should be paying them to allow you to write. 🙂
