Writing Jobs After Panda: There’s a Whole World out There

Over the past month, I’ve had many messages from writers who’ve been stung by Google’s Panda Update.

Their income from the content factories, while always pitiful, has vanished.

If you’re in this group of writers, this is a good thing, believe it or not.

There’s been a theme to these wails. All the writers are inexperienced. They’ve answered advertisements for “writing jobs” and landed on content factories.

It doesn’t help these writers when I say that these kinds of jobs are NOT jobs for writers. They have nothing to teach you, and if you stay too long, you’ll burn out.

That said, there’s a place for these sites if you’re a new writer.

In the first couple of weeks of Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON), I ask writers to post articles at a content site. This is for one reason only: so that they become comfortable with the Web interface. That’s all. Once you know how to do that, you must move on.

There’s a whole world of real writing jobs beyond these sites.

Here’s what I tell these Panda-affected writers: in the first instance, move on to the outsourcing sites. Win projects, get experience. You’ll learn a lot.

On the outsourcing sites, you’re paid to learn. Not only do you learn how to write, you also learn what people are buying, and how to work with clients. That’s invaluable.

These sites show you your strengths. Build on those strengths, and then move on. By the time that happens, you’ll know what writing services you can offer — and offer them successfully.
