Write for Big Money: Become a Copywriter

In this coming week’s ezine, our theme is “Get Paid to Write Whatever You Like”. You can get paid to write just about anything these days.

It promises to be a fun issue. I started making a list of the kinds of writing you could do to make money today, and had to stop — it was pointless. There are literally endless opportunities — the ezine will be out in a couple of days. If you want to read that issue, do subscribe. The issues aren’t archived.

So, you can write whatever you like. However, if you want to make great money, even as a beginner, you need to become a copywriter.

Copywriting is writing to sell, basically, and it’s very well paid because your writing makes money for others.

Every writer should know the fundamentals of writing copy because you need to sell your writing; there’s no way around that fact. You can’t make money writing if you can’t sell your own services.

Copywriting isn’t a big deal. Many copywriters try to create a mystique around it (and around themselves), which makes me giggle, because the fundamental copywriting formulae haven’t changed in over a century.

Your clients may think you create magic, but you’re just following a well-laid track, and getting well paid to do it.

If you want to become a copywriter, your DESIRE is your firmest indication that you can do it. (Actually, that applies to any form of writing — if you want to write something or other, your desire to do it is a good indication that with know-how, application, and persistence you CAN do it. Your desire is your intuition smacking you in the gut to get your attention.)

Here’s a tip: if you want to become a copywriter, start paying attention to copy. Read advertisements wherever you find them. Many copywriters keep a “swipe file” for inspiration. Watch the ads on TV and check out the ads on Web pages. Read your junk mail.

Copywriting is huge fun, and it’s the most quickly profitable form of writing there is. (Aside from, as one wag pointed out, ransom notes. :-) )

Copywriting is a great home business

Developing a copywriting services business makes sense if you want to write from home.

How does $300 an hour sound to you? Copywriters are in high demand.

There’s no limitations on who can write copy. Neither age nor education is a bar: your clients don’t care.

So whether you’re a stay-at-home mom or a retiree, or just want to moonlight at your current job, copywriting is the most lucrative (and the most fun, if you love to write) occupation you can try.
