Article Writing: How to Write Newsletter Articles That Sell

Want to write newsletter articles that sell? Writing newsletters to sell is a form of copywriting, and this makes it fundamentally different from writing to inform. Let’s look at three points which you need to keep in mind.

I’ve been writing newsletters for my copywriting clients for the past three decades. One client has been with me for 15 years.

Here’s what works for me…

1. Remember Education

Your clients send out newsletters in order to educate their customers.

Perhaps they have a new product which is the first of its kind on the market, or they want to differentiate themselves from other products in the same general area in some way.

It’s essential your client gives you the information which you can present to readers, so ask lots of questions. Then think about what the customers need to know, and ways in which you can present that information.

Often, your client is running promotions in sales channels like TV and radio, and you’ll need to be “on message”. This makes writing much easier, because you can fill in the gaps in readers’ knowledge of the products in the campaigns.

2. Remember to Entertain

If you don’t entertain your readers, they’ll toss the publication aside. Luckily, entertaining is easy. Just remember “emotion”.

Work out which emotions you want to target in your readers: excitement, enthusiasm, fear… Usually you’ll share anecdotes which will arouse your target emotion in readers.

Reader stories are always a great way to excite and intrigue.

3. Deliver Practical How-To Information

The more you can encourage the your audience to use your information, the more successful you’ll be.

Your client is sending out the publication in order to achieve a certain purpose. Usually this will be sales. However, it may not be.

If your client is a publicly listed company, the company has certain responsibilities to shareholders. In this case, your audience includes not only the company’s customers, but also its shareholders.

Writing articles for newsletters can be very profitable. If you want to make money in this industry, keep the three points in mind and you’ll write articles which sell, and which your client will love.
