Interesting news on the content front: AOL is buying the Huffington Post for $315 million. It’s interesting for writers, because the Huff Post doesn’t pay for content.

“… the Huffington Post is doing exactly what AOL does—or wants to do—but even better, because most of its content is completely free. Its biggest strength is as a smart aggregator, not a content creator…”

Two things for you to think about.

1. Content is valuable;

2. If companies can get content for free, they will. No one wants to pay writers. :-)

There’s nothing new in this. Content is and will remain, valuable, and no one ever wants to pay writers. Long before the birth of the Web, when I was writing for magazines, many magazines didn’t pay writers. For some this was a deliberate strategy — why pay when you can get it for free? Many “paying” magazines were paying “on publication”. This meant that they paid writers months and years after publication, and in many, many cases never. These losers knew writers would give up on chasing them.

The solution is what it’s always been. Write for yourself. Figure out how to make money from your words yourself. The sooner you do that, the more secure you’ll be, and the more money you will make.
