Freelance Writing: Intuition Equals Creativity

muse.jpg
Writers write by following their intuition… and yet, whenever I suggest to my writing students that they should trust their intuition, it comes as a surprise to them that it’s OK to do that.

Why discount your intuition? It’s your creativity at work.

Unfortunately, you can’t explain intuition. You’ll sound like a fool if you try… you end up talking about your muse.

Writers can’t explain it, so they discount the role of intuition in their writing. (Hint: don’t try to explain it, it’s a mystery. :-) )

So, I thought I’d better write a blog post which will help you to pay attention to your intuition, so that you become more creative, and learn to TRUST YOURSELF. You intuition is, after all, you.

Important: your intuition equals creativity. And without creativity, you’re not a writer, you’re a typist.

All writing is a process of discovery. You never know what you’ve got to say until you write it. That’s your intuition at work: your intuition is constantly helping you as you write — it helps you to choose ideas, and even one word out of half a dozen.

The more attention you pay to your intuition, the more powerful and useful it becomes.

Consider paying attention to:

* Topics, ideas, and processes that excite you;

* Desires (“I want to write that/ read that/ try that…”);

* Sudden insights.

Excitement and enthusiasm are always a signal that your intuition and creativity are alive and well.

Anxiety blocks your intuition

Be aware that stress and anxiety block your intuition.

Your intuition is also blocked when you put labels on things, and indulge in making judgments. The more open to your experiences you are, without judging them, the more your intuition flows.

According to scientist Candace Pert, (author of Molecules of Emotion), intuition comes from your subconscious mind: from every cell of your body.

This means that you need to trust your physical feelings — your “gut”. As you pay attention to what you’re feeling in your body, you’ll soon learn to decode your intuitive flashes.

Learning to pay attention to your intuition isn’t easy, but over time, as you learn to trust yourself, you’ll come to understand what your subconscious is sharing with you. All you need to do is write it down. :-)

I touched on your intuition in this post, Writing and intuition: follow your luck, and also in this one, How to solve every writing challenge you have.

Value your intuition. It’s always available to you.
