There’s never been a better time to build a writing career: you have millions of prospective clients. Getting your first client however, can be a challenge. You may believe that you need to hunt for “writing jobs”. You don’t. The best gigs are never advertised, and they can be yours.
Firstly, let’s talk about mindset. You’re trying something new, and it’s natural to feel nervous. Accept this: it’s perfectly normal.
Your nerves will fade quickly, as long as you communicate. Just remember to be polite, friendly and interested. Your clients are your friends — focus on them, rather than on yourself.
Try these simple strategies.
1. Online Forums: Profit from Your Signature File
You can get clients while you’re having fun. Do you have a favorite forum you hang out in? If you don’t, find such a forum.
This forum can be focused on anything in which you’re interested: parenting, fashion, sports… (No, not writers’ forums. Writers can’t hire you.)
Forums allow signature files. They’re tiny snippets which are added to your posts automatically. In your signature, add a link to your website, or just to your Twitter or Facebook page, with “freelance writer”, or “writer for hire”.
Please don’t promote yourself overtly. Your signature file is all the promotion you need. You’ll get hired.
2. Your Website: Make an Offer They Can’t Refuse
If you’ve got a website, you’re way ahead of the game. Good for you!
Post some of your writing samples on the site, and add a prominent link.
On your home page, add a “Work With Me”, or “Hire A Writer” paragraph or two. Tell visitors what you write, and how to get in touch with you.
To get traffic, use the forum strategy above.
3: Write a Query Letter: Get Known, Get Hired
I’ve built my entire career on writing query letters. They’re just as effective today, as they were 30 years ago, when I started out.
Big tip: be yourself. You can’t be anyone else, and it’s foolish to try.
When you’re writing query letters, just communicate. You can send them to any publication which pays, online or offline. Offer the editors story ideas.
Have fun. Getting your first client is the start of a wonderful writing career.
