A writer friend is on vacation, and she’s miserable because she can’t settle down to write. “I haven’t written a word in three days,” she complains. When she’s working, despite the fact that she has four children and a demanding job, she nevertheless manages to freelance for several companies in her “spare” time.
Now she’s faced with hours of free time, she can’t push herself to sit down at the keyboard.
That’s often the way. When you have little time to write, you get on with it, and make the most of every minute.
I write everywhere — it’s an addiction. I find I’m more productive when I’m out of my office. I write in coffee shops, the local park, and in the library. (I even write on my iPhone in the supermarket checkout line.)
A couple of years ago, I wrote this article, How to be a five-minute writer: writing when there’s NO time | Writing Hacker by Angela Booth, and said:
“I take along a Circa notebook. The Circa format makes it easy to add and remove pages, and if you have a Circa punch, you can slot your current project into your notebook easily.”
My tools have changed. I now take along my iPad and iPhone, and use SimpleNote. My notes are automatically synced with all my devices, and the Web.
If you’re waiting to write until you have more time — stop waiting. You may find that having too much time is worse than having too little. If you’ve got a minute, write.
