Ebook Writing: Finding Clients

One benefit of writing for outsourcing sites is that there are always employers looking for freelance writers who are interested in ebook writing. So if you want to ghostwrite ebooks and make some money, this is a good place to start.

The very first ebook I ever wrote was for a client on Guru and I got the job, not because of my experience in writing ebooks, but because it focused on a South African topic. Since I live in South Africa, I was at an immediate advantage. I bid on the job and was chosen because I was able to succinctly plan what needed to go into the ebook, based on both personal knowledge and some quick research.

Since then all the ebooks I have written have been for Elance clients, and mostly on subjects I am familiar with. The one exception relates to achieving goals, which I suppose is a life experience. The reason I got the job was that I had previously delivered quality articles to the same client.

When virtual employers post jobs related to ebooks on outsourcing sites, they will usually give a brief outline of what it is they want covered. They will also state how many pages it should be and give a maximum budget. Some will provide a basic structure you will need to follow.

Freelance writers who have never written ebooks before should generally stick to topics they have some knowledge of, although a good researcher may be able to tackle a foreign subject with ease. This won’t necessarily improve your chances of winning the bid, but it will improve the odds of you succeeding.

The more ebook writing you do, the easier it will become, and the more money you will be able to demand from clients. That, in a word, spells “experience”, and astute clients will pay for experience.

About penny

Even though I wasn't particularly good at writing essays when I was at school, I have been writing for most of my life. My father was a newspaper editor and I practically grew up in the newsroom. It wasn't that he wanted to initiate me to the way of life, but rather that we enjoyed each other's company. Eventually, armed with a useless Bachelor of Social Science degree, I decided I wanted to be a journalist. Nothing he could say would change my mind. In fact the more he tried to put me off the more determined I became. All these years later I still yearn for the thrill of chasing news stories and sharing the newsroom buzz. But when I got married I drifted into magazines and wrote about crafts, homes and gardens. Then I had children and wrote for a family magazine. I shared the birth of my first son on the pages of this publication. Spreading my wings to bigger things, I managed to become a respected author of multiple non-fiction books, mostly home improvement, with a smattering of horses. I've been lucky to get projects that match my interests and passions. Today I have turned to the Internet as a source of writing income. It lacks the newsroom buzz and the prestige of quality printed media, but it offers variety and the opportunity to work from home.
