You, the Writing Entrepreneur: Writing and Thriving, Despite the Content Mills

Writing has become a commodity: “content”.

It’s all very sad, but there’s no going back. If you aspire to writing success these days you need to be aware of the changes in all areas of publishing, and adapt. You can’t hand the reins of your career over to others; you need to take charge yourself, to avoid being classed as just another content producer.

“Don’t Blame the Content Farms” reports:

“Entrepreneurial journalism — an increasingly popular topic at journalism schools and institutes around the U.S. — is just that, entrepreneurial… Those upset that their skills can’t get them more from the market might do well to bolster those skills. No longer is it enough to be able to report and write; hiring managers are looking for the ability to template, shoot, mic and perhaps even write a bit of code. If you don’t know how to use Twitter these days, you’re nowhere near the cutting edge.”

While using Twitter might not be enough to take you as far in your career as you might wish, it’s a start in thinking about yourself as an entrepreneur, rather than as simply a writer.

Next week, we’ll be discussing entrepreneurial writing on the blog, and what it involves, and means.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Are you beginning to consider yourself as more than a writer — as an entrepreneur, perhaps?

If so, how do you feel about this? Are you anxious? Excited? Depressed?
