Writing for Money: Grow With the Web and Profit

Do you want to write for money? Perhaps you already do. Either way, in this article we’ll talk about two vital things you need to keep in mind if you want to grow with the Web, and want your profits to increase exponentially.

I’ve been online since the mid-1980s… those long-ago days of command line interfaces and Bulletin Board Systems, many years before the birth of the Web.

That may be why I get so frustrated with writers who are reasonably new to writing for the online world. I take a longer view than they do. As a group, they have one trait in common: they’re too focused on what’s happening right now, and what they think immediate events in their career mean, rather taking the long view, and focusing on where they’ll be as a writer next year, and the year after that.

Everyone has daily challenges… any temporary challenges and setbacks can’t define or limit you. Only you can put limits on yourself.

I wrote this article, “Writing Career: One-Year Fast Track to Success”, which is required reading (please take it to heart); it will help you to develop a longer view, and an amazing career one short year from today.

So, what two things do I want you to keep in mind? Here they are.

1. Be aware that the Web is growing explosively, and think about what that means for your writing career

I do lots of keyword research, and the traffic for the keywords I watch doubles every eight to ten months. More pages, and many more searches in those markets.

Also, according to WorldWideWebSize.com, the Web is currently 24 billion pages in size. Check its size next week, and you’ll find millions more indexed pages. Each day, millions of pages are added to the Web, and more people are using the Web in more ways.

Now, what does all this frenzied activity mean to you, the journeyman, or aspiring, writer? It means that since the Web is built on ideas and and words, the online market for your words is constantly increasing: you have more opportunities than you know what to do with.

The Web is growing: are you growing with it? If you’re not planning and working toward the writing career you’ll have in 2011, 2012 and beyond, you’re stagnating.

Focus on growing: write more, learn more… and earn more.

2. It’s impossible for you to know what you can, and can’t do as a writer — plan big for the writer you WILL become

Each day that you write, you’re building your writing skills, and are becoming a better writer. You’re almost certainly a better writer than you think you are. Writers are lousy judges of their own writing.

Therefore if you have doubts about your ability, relax. Your ability grows with every word you write. This is why I say that 95 per cent of a writer’s challenges can be easily solved: just write more. :-)

I encourage you that when you plan, you take into account the writer you will be in one or more years. I encourage you not only to write for the Web, and to realize that the opportunities are limitless, but also to realize that only you can limit yourself. Grow with the Web, and prosper.
