“How do I get started writing for money?” is the most common question I receive each week.
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to answer this question without knowing a great deal about you.
I need to know:
* What you’re doing now (your day job);
* How much writing experience you have (if any);
* How much time you can devote to writing each day (one hour? Two hours?);
* Your financial and other goals.
Once I know that, I can develop a plan which will get you where you want to go.
An aside — I created Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) as a step by step guide to help writers to get started making money from their writing, because I receive the “How do I get started” question so often.
Freelance writing is easy (yes, it really is), because you’re needed
Buyers of writing services are desperate for your skills. These days, a business of any size MUST have writers on whom they can call. This is because businesses are finding that the Web is becoming ever more important to their bottom line.
With some amusement, I’ve watched companies which a couple of years ago ignored Web sales. In 2008, they thought the Web was a waste of time. Today, they’re sending out daily updates to their mailing lists, are offering special Web-only deals, and are adding content to their site (or sites) daily.
They need writers to create all that content, and finding those writers can be a real challenge. They WANT and NEED you, so if you’re not getting more writing jobs than you can handle, there’s a reason — you’re doing something wrong.
Apropos of that, I wrote “Writing Jobs: 3 Reasons You’re Not Getting Hired” for my writing blog, so you may want to read that and fix whatever you’re flubbing.
Now please read the above questions again, slowly. They’re important.
Answer those questions, in writing, just for yourself.
If you can answer those questions, you’ll be well on the way to turning yourself into a writer who’s easy to hire, because you know yourself. Then you decide what you can do in the future.
Here’s an easy way to get started making money from your writing: write Web articles. If you can become an article-writing pro, you can name your own price online, and you’ll have created a great foundation on which you can build for the future.
