How’s the health of your freelance writing career? Good, great, brilliant? Or are you languishing, writing far too much for far too little?
Let me be brutally frank. In the current economic climate, if you didn’t reply “Brilliant!” to my question, you’re letting yourself down.
In two articles, I’ll show you how to spit on your hands, and really get down to business. It’s not difficult, I promise you. Moreover, you’ll be able to use every scrap of writing experience you have — AND your writing career will take off like a rocket.
Here’s a secret: success in any field depends on who you know… and on who knows you
When I started writing, way back in the dark ages of the 1970s, I wrote for publishers in the UK (I’m in Australia), and that was fine. I wanted to get my first book published, and I’d decided that since romance novels were so simple and formulaic, I could write them in my sleep. (Apologies to you if you’re writing romance, you know that while the novels may appear formulaic, there’s much more to it than that.
)
I digress. My point is this: in those long ago days before the Web, I was selling what I was writing (romance novels) to the only people who could buy my material: romance publishers in the UK. (Stay with me here, I do have a point I’m making.)
IN 2010, you can write for a global market too.
The Web makes it simple, and easy, if you know what you’re doing, and can prove that you know. BUT — and it’s a big BUT — writing for the global market, if you don’t have a name, and don’t have a marketing funnel, is challenging, and you’re ignoring the many, many writing jobs which are much, much easier to get.
Completely by accident, in the early 1980s, I started to write for local businesses. It was fun. It was easy. I didn’t have to advertise, I wrote for business owners who knew me, because I was running a business too, and was writing copy for that business.
In 2010, if you’re trying to write for the global marketplace, and it’s not working for you, it’s because you don’t have the fundamentals… You’re not known. You’re competing with too many other writers.
Here’s the answer: focus on a market where there’s little or no competition: your own backyard.
Tomorrow, I’ll continue this article, with Part Two. You’ll discover exactly HOW to conquer your local market, and how to get more writing jobs than you can handle.
In the process of doing this, you’ll get the skills, the experience, AND the name, which will give you success globally, not just locally.
Watch for tomorrow’s article, and discover how to collect the plum writing jobs you’re currently ignoring.
Here’s Part Two.
