PLR Content: Turn Words Into Cash (Editorial)

If you love writing, then becoming a provider of Private Label Rights content (PLR) may be for you.

You can write PLR articles, ebooks, and courses – you can even create audio and video files and sell them as PLR content. You’re constrained only by your imagination, and by what people are looking for. Many writers have built great businesses on providing PLR content.

When you sell PLR content, you sell a limited number of copies. For example, let’s say you’ve written ten excellent Web articles on the topic of weight loss. Generally speaking weight loss PLR content sells well, so if you promote your offering, you’ll sell your content.

You decide to sell 100 copies of your ten PLR articles at $4.95. If you sell out, you’ll have made $495 for your ten articles; which is $49.50 per article. Considering that each article may only have taken you 20 minutes to write, your hourly rate is reasonable.

Please note that the above is only an example. The prices you charge are up to you. Generally speaking, you’d charge around $1 per article in a package. You may want to sell some packages cheaply, to build up your mailing list of buyers. Your buyers are those people who will buy from you over and over again.

Let’s look at PLR content in a little more detail.

What is PLR?

Basically PLR content is ghostwritten content. People buy this content for their own use. You sell this content with all rights, so your buyers can do anything they like with it. They can post it onto their sites, or use it for ebooks, courses, and other materials. They can edit your PLR content, or they can use it as-is.

Why write it?

Writers write PLR content because there’s a demand. I should clarify that: there’s a demand for good, well-written PLR content.

Unfortunately, there’s very little good PLR content around. Most PLR material is sub-par. Many of my students have been shocked, and then cheered, when they’ve bought PLR content on some forum, and it was… awful. They were shocked because they spent their hard-earned money, but cheered when they realized that there’s little to no competition for good PLR content.

How much money can you make?

The amount of money you can make varies.

You can make a great income, provided you:

* Choose topics which can be monetized
* Write reasonably well
* Market your services and products effectively
* Create a lot of products

Let’s look at those four points in a little more detail.

Choose topics which can be monetized

The best PLR content, and the easiest to sell, is written on topics which are easy to monetize. Your buyers will be using the PLR you write to make money, so it’s essential that you keep this in mind.

Here’s a big secret to writing PLR content which sells over and over again: steer clear of topics on which you enjoy writing. Enjoyment doesn’t come into it. Remember that your buyers will use your content to make money, which means that there must be lots of opportunities to monetize that content.

Broad categories of topics you could consider include: health, relationships (dating etc) and money.

Write reasonably well

I’ve seen a lot of truly woeful PLR content. It was woeful because it was thin: it contained little (if any) useful information. The best advice I can give you is to stuff your content with valuable information. The people who buy PLR content buy a lot of it, and they’ll become repeat buyers if you provide great content.

Research and write outlines for your content before you start writing, and when you’re done, check your spelling and grammar.

Market your services and products effectively

If you’re a brand new writer, get some experience by writing PLR content for others. This shows you how writing and selling PLR works. It’s a business, and if you approach it that way you’ll do well.

Advertise your PLR content writing services and products on forums for marketers and webmasters. You can also approach companies which are already selling PLR content (do a Google search for “buy PLR content” to find them) to write PLR content.

Create a lot of products

Remember that there’s a lot of rubbishy PLR content around. This makes buyers wary. Post samples of your content on your site, so buyers can assess the quality of your offerings.

And do create LOTS of PLR content. The biggest mistake I see new providers making is that they just don’t write enough – this means that they don’t have sufficient material to truly excite buyers.

Let’s look at how two writers operate. Writer A writes a package of 15 articles on borrowing money. This is a great topic, so he should do well. He promotes his content for a week, and sells five to ten copies. Then he stops promoting. He’s already stopped writing… At the end of a month, he’s made a little money, but decides that he’s not selling enough, so looks for something “easier” to write.

Writer B writes a package of 15 articles on borrowing money. He promotes this package while he’s writing additional packages on related topics – personal loans, interest-free credit cards, and getting out of debt. At the end of a month, not only has he sold 50 copies of his “borrowing money” articles, he’s sold copies of the additional packages he’s written. He’s also been asked to write exclusive PLR content by two of his buyers, who like his style.

Who hires you to write PLR?

The easiest way to get writing jobs writing PLR content is to approach the companies which are selling PLR content. Remember, most PLR content sold today is truly woeful. The PLR companies know their content is horrible, and are eager for good writers.

Selling your own PLR content

Once you’ve gained a little experience in writing PLR content for others, you can write your own, and can sell it yourself.

Writing and promotion go together. Before you start writing, create a plan for how you’ll promote this material you’re writing. You can sell your PLR content from your own site, there’s no need to set up a new site. Ideally, you’ll have a blog on which you can promote your content, but a blog isn’t enough, you need to do as much promotion as you can, particularly when you’re just starting out.

Remember that all promotion is cumulative: the more you do, the more you get known, and the more you sell.

If you’re just starting out, free promotional methods are fine. You can use the free press release sites and free classifieds sites for promotion, as well as article marketing.

If you’re an established writer, decide on a promotional budget. You’ll get best results from using direct sales methods like Pay Per Click advertising. You can also use paid press releases, and can advertise on sites which your target market visits.
