Writing and doing: the more you do, the luckier you get

Freelance writing can begin as a career, and can then develop into a highly profitable business. To put it bluntly, you can make more money as a writer than you can in any day job. However, you do need to DO stuff to be successful.

A long time ago, a successful writer told me: “only writing is writing, and the more you write, the luckier you get.”

I’ve noticed that when I create goals and plans, and simply get on with it, everything falls into place.

With my writing students, once I convince them that only their output counts, nothing else, they reach an entirely new level in their careers within a matter of weeks.

Beginning writers tend to write, and then wait to see what happens. Since five articles are unlikely to set the world on fire, nothing much happens and they get frustrated.

They wonder what they’re doing wrong.

The answer to that is: you’re not doing anything wrong; you’re just not doing enough.

It’s as if a farmer sowed a tiny patch of dirt and wondered where the harvest was ten minutes later.
