Writing from home: yes, it’s real work

It’s a great life. However, you do need to ensure that you create a schedule which works for you. If you’re tempted to wait until you’re “inspired”, please don’t. Getting inspiration happens while you’re actively working.

A schedule sounds grim, but to be successful, you need to treat your writing as real work. Remember the saying, “the harder I work, the luckier I get.”

“‘Get up at a normal hour, have breakfast, get dressed, make your coffee and go to your home office. Stay off Facebook and other personal sites except for lunch. End the day like you would a normal work day and go off to do what you normally would have done after work–pick up the kids, go to the gym, happy hour, whatever.’”

That’s excellent advice; the only alteration I’d make is that you fit in your exercise before you start writing. If you’re anything like me, you’ll get totally engrossed in what you’re doing, and it will seem as if it’s much more important than exercise — you’ll tend to put exercise off.

Exercise first: you’ll have more energy right throughout the day, and if you’re a full-time writer, you’ll avoid the mid-afternoon slump, when you reach for chocolate.
