1. Start With a Goal, and a Plan

Before you rush away and write your first blog post, think about your goals. You can have as many goals as you like, but focus on one clear goal for your blog and create a plan to achieve that goal.

If your goal is to turn your blog into a home business, do a little research online and see how others are doing it. There’s lots of advice online, from people who’ve been doing what you want to do — learn from their experience.

Your plan can be simple. In fact, the simpler it is, the better.

One blogger I know had a plan that was ultra-simple: create three blog posts a week. He didn’t alter his plan for a month, until he had 300 visitors a day, and could see what his visitors found most useful.

2. Remember the Three-Month Rule

When you’re starting from zero, and your blog is completely new, please realize that it takes time to get noticed.

Here’s my three month rule: whatever you do today, will pay off in three months.

If you remember that rule, your blog will succeed, because you’ll realize the value of focus and persistence.

3. Invest in Your Content: It Will Pay off

Every word you write for your blog is an investment in your future. Original blog content is always valuable, whether you keep your blog, or later decide that you’ll sell it.

Looking on your blog’s content as an investment will help you to follow the three-month rule.

4. Themes? Just Focus on Content Initially

You want your blog to look great. However the search engines — and most of your traffic will eventually come from the search engines — can’t see how pretty your blog is. They can only see content.

Therefore, focus on content for the first couple of months.

There’s no point in choosing a theme or a template now. You’ll waste time customizing your theme, then decide that it’s not right and choose another theme, and then you’ll go back to your first theme because the second theme broke something.

Initially, all the time you have available should be spent on writing your blog. It will pay off handsomely, much more quickly than you expect.
