Writing for websites? Try Google’s nifty browser size tool

Whether you’re writing your own websites, or someone else’s, you know that people will read your content in many different ways. If you make it too difficult for them to read, you’ve lost them; they “bounce”.

I’ve just been trying out Google’s new Browser Size tool.

In the image above, I’ve set it to the Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) page, and I can see that I’ll need to redo the page, because 99% of visitors can’t see much at all.

Why is browser size important?

As Google Browser Size Helps Keep Your Content Above The Fold reports:

“One issue web designers face is ensuring that they keep their important content ‘above the fold’ — you don’t want users to have to scroll down to see the hottest story or a call to action. Browser Size helps with this, by visualizing just what percentage of the Internet-browsing population can see a certain part of your page. This is related not only to screen resolution, but also how large people keep their browser windows.”
