Over the past week, I’ve been running a writing goals workshop, helping several writers to get comfortable with goal-setting and achievement.
Goal setting seems to be a challenge for many writers. In tomorrow’s issue of Fab Freelance Writing Ezine our theme is “writing with confidence”, and much of that confidence stems from setting and achieving goals.
Here are some little known tactics which will help you to achieve your goals.
1. You should LOVE any goal you set
Why would you set boring goals? Writing is all about creativity, and you can only be creative when you’re totally engrossed in something… when you LOVE whatever it is you love.
Boring goals are dispiriting, but setting goals you love is a major challenge.
Please focus on what you truly love, and set goals for that, to give yourself the best chance of achievement.
2. All your goals must be time-limited
A goal without a deadline is a dream. Set a deadline — any deadline. You can always change it later.
3. You can’t do goals, you can only do tasks
Make sure that as soon as you set a goal, you create a list of tasks which will help you to achieve it, and enter your tasks into your calendar program, paper agenda, or whatever it is you use.
I use several different calendar programs to help me to manage my goals and task lists.
4. If a goal no longer fits, change it or delete it
You’re changing every day. You know more today about how writing works than you did yesterday, and you’ll know more tomorrow.
Therefore, any goal you set needs to change, as you change.
There’s more in the ezine tomorrow about goals and intentions, so I won’t go into that here.
