Writing now, success later

Do you expect to be a successful writer? I hope you do.

However, if you’re just starting out, success can seem a long time coming. You want to be successful NOW.

That’s not the way it works: you write NOW, and success builds.

The desperation of some new writers to leap-frog to instant success would be funny, if it weren’t so dangerous.

Here’s a scenario. Betty NewWriter decides that she hates her job at Wherever Company. Her boss is a monster, there are whispers that the company is in trouble (orders are down), and she has to commute two hours every day. She’d love to work from home, and she knows she could write for the web.

Betty’s heard that you can get lots of writing jobs online, so she starts writing, and is disappointed. It seems that no one wants to pay for content. She wants great jobs, where she’s making at least $70 to $100 an hour. She hates the jobs she’s offered — why should she write for $20 an hour?

What you write today, gets results three months from now

If you’re suffering like Betty, here’s the best advice I can give you: write and keep writing. Success is sneaking up on you. One day, not to long from today, you’ll turn around, and you’ll discover that you’re the success you dreamed of being.

You get to where you want to be by writing, not by thinking that there’s something wrong with the writing jobs you’re getting now.

I’ve written about planning your writing on my blogs and in the ezine, and yes, planning is essential. However, initially you may not know how to plan, because you don’t have the experience. Your first plan may just be to get one writing job, and then another one, and another one. That’s fine.

Every word you write builds your experience, so keep writing, because what you write today will show results (in money, in experience, and in great writing jobs) three months from today.

Why three months?

Because that’s the way it works. Mark your calendar. It’s November 2009. Write every day between now and February 2010, and see.

Relax and write, and “instant success” will sneak up on you.
