I’ve just completed a lesson for Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) graduates on freelance mastery, specifically how to conduct a six-month review of your business. It’s something I haven’t covered here, and it’s worth discussing, and doing, if you’re not already in the habit of it.
How long since you’ve reviewed what’s happening in your writing business? Now’s a good time to conduct one, before the holiday season gets into full gear.
As the year winds to a close, I like to do my yearly review of my business in November. In Australia, December and January are summer months, and everyone is either planning a vacation or is happily on vacation. No one wants to think about business too much.
Here’s what to review:
* Your clients
* Your marketing
* Your writing
Once you’ve conducted your review, and depending on the number of clients you have, this could take anywhere from five to ten hours, write a report, and set goals for 2010.
Review your clients
It’s time to separate the sheep from the goats. Which clients will you keep? Who will you fire? (Yes, you can fire clients; I like to do it by referring them elsewhere.)
Check not only how much you’ve earned from each client, but also their PITA (pain in the a**) factor.
While you’re doing this, think about each clients’ needs. Make some notes about possible proposals for them: as you get to know a client’s business, you can propose projects.
For example, if you’ve written mailings for a client, propose a blog to them, or a social media marketing campaign. Don’t feel that you’re being pushy, your clients will appreciate the time you’re taking to think about them and their business.
Review your marketing
What forms of marketing have you been using? Choose two new forms of marketing with which to experiment in 2010.
Review your writing
What are you writing now? What do you want to write? Plan new projects for 2010, so that you can make it your best year ever.
