Freelance writing: are the outsourcing sites worth it?

by angela.booth on October 22, 2009

If you’re new to writing for money, it’s very easy to make your first few dollars. Just use the outsourcing sites. Buyers are DESPERATE for writers, and if you want to make money, you will.

The general standard of writing is low on the web, and as one of my friends said to me, the only thing you need for success on the outsourcing sites is a pulse, and the willingness to show up.

There are challenges, however.

I had to giggle when I read this article. Beware Of The Job Bidding Site Sucker! : Freelance Writing reports:

“So after receiving a misleading offer to write for a new client he asked me for a free 600 word sample article on a specific topic. How dumb do YOU think I AM?

Listen up! Why do you think you have to provide free samples? This is what a portfolio site is for! Plus, your local electrician and plumber don’t do free either, do they? Stop being sucked into the belief that you need to work for free to angle new clients, most of the time it is a trick to acquire free articles and never pay a dime to a freelancer anyway.”

So true. :-)

If this ever happens to you, just quote the person a price for the sample; legitimate buyers will offer to pay you for your trial with them anyway. They’ll offer to pay you for one article or whatever, to see whether you’re a match for the project.

The big benefit of the outsourcing sites — and the reason I recommend them in products like my sell your services package is that they’ll rapidly turn even the humbles tyro into a pro. You’ll discover that writing for money is no big deal: you’ll get paid and paid well, as soon as you have some experience.

The outsourcing sites ensure that you earn while you learn. What’s not to like?
