Are you a copywriter? You’re lucky, because there’s never been a better time to start a copywriting career — there’s more work than you can handle. You may have heard that one of the easiest ways to market your services and to generate a consistent high income is to create a blog.
That’s true. However, while a blog can be a fantastic marketing tool, it can also be a complete disaster. There are several pitfalls to avoid.
For example, invariably when a copywriter creates a blog, he decides that he’ll write about copywriting.
1. Write About Copywriting? No!
Usually, writing about copy is a mistake. Although you’ll get lots of traffic to the blog because “copywriting” is a popular keyword, getting paying clients from that traffic is a hit and miss affair.
Unless there’s a special reason for you to create a blog about your own profession, create a blog which will appeal to your target audience. For example, if you write for many real estate clients, it makes sense to create a real estate blog.
Similarly, if all your clients live in your local area, developing a blog about on your local city or state is a great idea.
When you target your primary audience, or location, you can use your blog as a writing sample to let your clients know that you’re an expert. This is very appealing to clients, and you’ll be able to charge more.
2. Create Regular Updates to Establish Your Blog
Once you’ve created your blog, realize that it will take time to become established, and to be indexed by the search engines. You can speed up this process by getting links from other blogs, but the major secret is to update your content regularly.
For the first three months, write several blog posts a week.
After three months, you can slow down the rate at which you post, because you’ll be getting a good amount of traffic from search engines and lots of inquiries about your services.
3. Learn Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Basics: It Pays Off
There are two ways you can promote your blog and copywriting services. One way is to pay for advertising. There’s nothing wrong with this, it works, and you’ll get consistent writing jobs.
If you’re blogging to get free traffic however, you’ll need to learn SEO basics. When you learn the basics: of keywords, page titles, and page descriptions, as well as the basics of link strategy, you’ll get a good flow of traffic, and from that traffic will come your copywriting clients.
