Writers and technology: are you a tech-wimp?

Many writers are scared of the technical aspects of web writing.

Things like:

* Buying a domain name;

* Buying web hosting; and

* Setting up a website or blog;

Scare them half to death.

Even things like backing up the material on their computer seems scary.

For members of my web writing training, Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON), the tech questions are answered in the training. And of course, members know they can contact me, or Julia, my assistant at any time and can get help.

If you’re not a SYWON member, here’s what I’d like you to do:

1. Realize that Google is your friend; and

2. Try finding YouTube videos which answer your questions about things you’re not sure of, or which seem too technical for you. There’s endless information on YouTube.

Once you have an answer to a question, try stuff out. You learn by doing technical stuff, and once you know how, you know.

Yes, you can hire people to do the tech stuff for you, but when you hire someone, you have to wait for them to do whatever it is, and this can be a hassle. Of course, you also have to pay them.

So please, take it slow, take it steady, set some goals for yourself to LEARN, and then achieve those goals step by step. Everything you learn will help you. People will help you too — if you really get stuck, ask someone. (Twitter is a great place to ask.)

You can, and should, use Twitter to build your writing career.
