Graphic design for writers: oh no….

I can hear the moans from here… You don’t want to know about graphic design. You’re not a designer, you’re a writer.

This is very true. Stick to your guns. :-)

You don’t need to know anything about graphic design to write. Nope, nothing at all. Your clients hire designers, who spend their entire lives doing this stuff.

Yes, occasionally a client asks you for input on design (KISS that person, he’s golden), and that’s not a problem, because there are thousands of designers online who are only too thrilled to give you advice, and maybe land a job.

An aside: I said KISS that person, because we writers tend to be the poor relation when it comes to creating websites, brochures, and marketing collateral. The client hires a designer, gets a piece of fantastic artwork, and then decides… hey, we need WORDS with that! And then hires you… (Your first instinct will be to consign them both to the ninth circle of Hell, because the design sets the emotional tone with which you’ll have to live, but I digress.)

So if you’re worried about design, don’t fret. It’s one of those things about which you can cheerfully say “Not my problem,” and go on with your life.

Jobs in Writing: Magazines

Many writers start high-profile careers by writing for magazines.

Magazine writing is both easy and highly profitable. Once you’ve learned the techniques in Angela Booth’s new writing guide “Freelance Writing: Make Great Money Writing Articles For Magazines (In Your Spare Time)”, you’ll soon be writing for magazines which pay from $1 to $4 PER WORD.
