Want to get more writing jobs than you can handle? Chances are that you’ve been looking for them in completely the wrong places. Hunting for writing jobs online wastes time.
There are many more writing jobs than are ever advertised, so let’s see how you can find them.
1. Use Twitter to Make Connections
Start by using Twitter.
Twitter is an amazing social networking, micro-blogging tool. If you’re not yet using Twitter, I encourage you to start today. Twitter is especially useful in finding writing jobs in your local community (more on that later).
People respond to you on Twitter who would totally ignore you if you sent them an email message. People let their guard down and relax on Twitter, and once you follow them they look on you as a friend — take advantage of this.
The more connections you have, that is the more people who know that you’re a writer and what you write, the more writing jobs you will get without having to hunt for them.
2. Home Town Advantage: Ask, to Receive
It always amazes me that writers apply for endless writing jobs online when they could just walk down the street and talk to people.
How many people in your hometown know that you write for money? Get some cards printed and hand them out. Hand a card to everyone you meet and just chat.
My writing students are shocked at the vast numbers of unadvertised writing jobs available in their hometown. These jobs are unadvertised because business people are busy. They can’t find the time to advertise, and since most don’t even realize that they can HIRE writers, they struggle to write their marketing material themselves.
They need somebody to write everything from video scripts to presentations and reports… help them out.
3. The Yellow Pages Goldmine: Use It
This method of finding unadvertised writing jobs is cheeky and fun. All you do is open your Yellow Pages, find some dud ads and rewrite them. Send the rewritten ad with a short note to the company’s owner.
Just say that you’re starting out offering your writing services and ask that the company keep you in mind when they need a writer.
Again, you’d be amazed at how simple and effective this is. It gets you known. People pass your name on.
Struggling To Find Writing Jobs?
Freelance writers just don’t realize how much money there is to be made by writing for the Web: many writers use the Web as a research tool, they don’t see the Web as a mass of millions of markets. They don’t realize that Web sites are STARVED for good writers.
