If you’re a writer, chances are that you procrastinate. Many writers do. However if you want to make money writing you need to produce. This means that you need a process for overcoming procrastination so that you can be prolific in your writing career.
Procrastination seems to strike long-project writers more than short-form writers, because you spend months and years writing without feedback. So if you want to write a book, these steps will be especially useful to you.
Here’s a simple process which I teach my writing students.
1. Why Are You Procrastinating? List 5 Reasons
Procrastination is a thief of your time which often appears in disguise.
You tell yourself that you have no time to write your article today…
Or that you only have 20 minutes to work on your book so there’s no point in getting started…
Or that you have a headache…
Or that you need to do more research…
These are ALL lies. When you can see them for the lies which they are you’re well on the way to ending your procrastination.
List five reasons you’re procrastinating on your current project.
See? They’re all lies.
2. Deal With Your Fear: Face It
Writers continually face the blank page or blank computer screen. This inspires fear. You’re about to learn an easy way in which you can transform your fear into excitement.
Tell yourself that if you can talk, you can write.
When you get an attack of nerves, sit with the fear for a moment.
Close your eyes, lean back in your chair and feel the area in your body in which you are experiencing the fear. You usually feel this emotion either in your chest or in your belly. Just sit with the emotion for a moment and feel the physical effects.
You’ll notice that as you sit with your fear, it will build up and then it will slowly disappear. All fear is self limiting. There’s a limit to how scared you can get.
Once you’ve learned this simple technique you will be free of fear forever — you’ll enjoy writing, and your anxiety will be a thing of the past.
3. Answer This Question to Change Your Life: “if I Didn’t Procrastinate, I Could…”
Take a piece of paper and write “If I didn’t procrastinate, I could ________” finish the sentence.
Write 200 words: list what overcoming your procrastination would mean to you.
Remember these simple techniques and your procrastination will be just a memory.
