Want to build a successful writing career? Success has a lot to do with creativity, and while everyone is creative, few people make the most of this natural gift.

Let’s look at four ways in which you can boost your creativity.

1. Discover Your Most Creative Hours: Lark or Night Owl?

You’re much more creative at certain hours of the day than at others.

Perhaps you know already that you’re a night owl, and that you do your best creative work when the rest of the family are asleep. If you like to veg out in the evenings however, chances are that you’re a lark — get up a couple of hours earlier each morning, and write then.

For many years I was a night owl, but nowadays my most productive hours are in the morning, from five to nine o’clock. I get a second wind of creativity after 9 PM, but it doesn’t last long.

Experiment until you find the hours at which you’re most creative.

2. Play With Images: Find an Image, Write a Story

Your right brain, which houses in your creative ability, doesn’t think in words; it thinks in images. Therefore, if you want to boost your creativity, play with images. You can visit art galleries, take photographs, and can take up crafts like scrap booking.

Here’s an exercise: visit an art gallery site online, choose an image, and write the story of 250 words inspired by that image. This is a simple exercise, and you’ll be amazed that your brain is buzzing with creative ideas when you’ve completed it.

Try this exercise with the image above, Claude Monet’s Woman With a Parasol.

3. Blocked? Learn Something New

Your creativity is YOU. At times your creative well will run dry. This means that it’s time for you to learn something new. (If you work online, there’s always something new to learn.)

Take a course in something which interests you. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you unblock.

4. Use Your Emotions: What Do You Love or Hate?

Emotions can trigger creativity. Make a list of 10 things you love, and another list of 10 things you hate.

Choose one item from each list.

Now think about the thing you love. Close your eyes and wait for images and emotions to well up from your subconscious mind. You may be be surprised at what appears.

Now think about the thing you chose that you hate. Close your eyes again, and wait for the images and emotions to well up.

See? Your emotions are closely tied to to your creativity, so when you learn to use your emotions, your creativity will blossom.

Try these four easy tips. They’ll help you to build your writing career quickly.
