Are you making the most of the great (mostly free) tools online for freelancers? Here are some of my favorite tools — I use them all, every day.
Got a tool you love? Share it in the Comments.
Posterous
Posterous creates a website for you — just send an email message. Too simple, right? Here’s my Posterous site. I love Posterous because I love being about to create site content any time, anywhere.
Instapaper
Found a great Web page but don’t have time to read it? Instapaper saves it for you.
Box
I’ve been using Box for years. It lets you share documents with others, for free — upgrade if you need more storage. Just create a folder for a project, and send an invitation to your client. Now you have a safe, secure place you can upload and share documents. It’s much easier than sending a client an email message with an attachment.
Dropbox
I use several computers, and like being able to work on projects wherever I happen to be. Dropbox lets me sync material over multiple computers. I can work just as easily at the library, or in a coffee shop, as I can in my office. If I decide a need a document during a client meeting, it’s waiting for me in Dropbox.
Checkvist
I use Checkvist to create project outlines, with To Dos. It’s easy, free, fun and fast — and you can share your outlines with others. It’s great for working on projects with clients, and is free, but there’s a (cheap) Pro version as well.
Evernote
I love Evernote because I can use this great note-taking tool on all my computers, and on my iPhone too. Since I’m always creating notes on index cards, Evernote is great because I can snap a photo of a card on my Mac’s (and iPhone’s) camera, and have it uploaded to Evernote and available on any computer I use.
Wridea
Wridea is a nifty brainstorming tool. Not only can you save your ideas, but you can also share them with others.
Dreamstime
Need a photo? Get ridiculously cheap (and some free images) on Dreamstime. Buy the rights you want — or the rights your clients want.
Want more? Here’s a great list of freelance tools for anything and everything you’d ever need as a freelancer from DesignMag.
