“Substitute Editor — a pale, harassed and untidy-looking junior editor, usually from a major publishing house, who was forced to attend the conference at the last minute because the senior editor didn’t feel like doing it. Has no authority to acquire anything but doesn’t share this information with anyone. Has a perpetual cold or migraine, or contracts both during the first hour of the conference.”
