Freelance writing fees: there are no “standard” payment rates

Many moons ago, when I focused on writing magazine articles and books I always got a (private) giggle out of any editor who said: “That’s well above our standard payment rates”, or similar nonsense.

Whatever you’re writing, in any area, there are NO standard payment rates for writers. You set your own fees. Of course, there’s always a publication’s budget, and that’s another thing entirely. So when an editor or other buyer of your writing splutters about “standard rates” you can have a little chuckle too, and then get down to serious negotiation.

You set your fees for anything you write, and your fees depend a lot on your experience. If you’re an experienced writer in an area, you know how much you’re worth, and you’ve got the confidence to get it.

In this article Angela Booth’s Writing Blog: Freelance Writing Fees: How Much Will You Charge for Your Writing? I said:

“If you don’t have any writing experience, getting that experience is your first step and priority. Writing is just like any other trade or profession: you need to learn your craft, while charging apprentice rates, before you’re able to charge professional rates.

I encourage my writing students to get jobs on the outsourcing sites, so that they can collect some testimonials, and can get experience in charging for their words.”

Whenever anyone hauls out the “standard rates” chestnut, you know you’ve won the negotiation, so be kind to them. :-) However, that said, when you’re a new writer, what counts is the number of jobs you complete, and the number of testimonials to your writing expertise you can get.

In summary — when you’re worth it, you’re worth it, so don’t be afraid to say so.
