Top 3 Reasons You’re Not Making Money from Blogging

I’m definitely feeling negative today. :-) Sorry about that, but looking on the bright side, my grumpiness means that you get some information which can improve the results you’re getting with your writing.

Blogging is lots of fun, and it can be VERY profitable too, but you need to do it right.

If your blog isn’t making money for you, here are the top three reasons for that. I’ll expand on these three reasons later, because each deserves a longer post.

Here we go:

1. You Set Your Blog up on a Free Site

While Blogger and WordPress.com are great for starter blogs because they let you get your feet wet and experiment, if you want to create a blog which makes you serious money, spend a little money to set your blog up professionally.

You need your own domain name (around $10 a year), plus hosting for the domain (cheap for multiple blogs on HostGator), so you can install WordPress (free).

2. You Don’t Have Enough Content

I get email messages every day (this isn’t hyperbole, it’s literally true) about blogs which aren’t making money.

That’s not a surprise if you only have ten posts and you’re writing an authority blog; think in terms of hundreds of posts, please.

On the other hand, if you’re writing a product blog, you may only have two or three posts, but you’ll be promoting this blog heavily, usually via Pay Per Click advertising.

If you don’t know the difference between an authority blog, and a niche blog, it’s time to spit on your hands and do some research.

3. You Chose an Unprofitable Topic

Some topics are unprofitable. You usually discover this through trial and error (and yes, I’ve made boo boos too, and picked loser topics, so it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Live and learn.)

Your first step when picking a topic should be to find out whether ANYONE is making money with this topic.

Just enter your topic into Google and look on the right side of the search results page. Are there Sponsored Links? If there are, you may be onto a great topic.

Remember, when blogging, competition is a good thing — if other people are making money in this area, changes are good that you can too.
