We’ve been discussing marketing your freelance writing over the past couple of days. A mailing list is an essential tool for marketing.
Do you have a mailing list for your freelance writing clients? If you don’t already have one, create one today. Your contact data is the most vital information you possess – when you stay in touch with clients, you get more work without hunting for it.
A mailing list is essential, even if you’re writing for magazines. When you have a mailing list, you can contact your clients and stay in touch with them, basically you’re reminding them of your name, and of the services you provide.
Contact managing applications (like Microsoft Outlook) let you create mailing lists; check the Help files to familiarize yourself with this option. Alternatively, you can just store your contact data in a simple spreadsheet.
The benefits of a mailing list
* when you stay in touch with your clients so they remember your name when they need you;
* you can let your clients know what you been up to. This is vital. Most clients won’t have any idea of the range of the services you provide. If you recently written an e-book for someone for example, they may not know that you write brochures and auto responder sequences as well.
Yes, you can say to clients that you provide other services, but when they need a particular service your name will not spring to mind — keeping your clients updated on what’s happening with you gives them a great idea of the range of services you provide.
You’ll find that your clients give you unsolicited referrals too – some of my best writing gigs happened when a client referred me to a friend.
