What’s the difference between a freelance writer who markets, and a writer who doesn’t?
That’s simple: a writer who markets is snowed under with work, and can charge top dollar for it. The non-marketing writer whines and complains about “the economy” on writing forums to other writers who also don’t market. (If they did a little marketing, they’d be too busy to hang out on writing forums.)
If you’re unfamiliar with marketing, you may be shy. That’s fine — keep doing it. You WILL get over it, and from then on marketing will be fun for you, and your writing business will explode.
It doesn’t matter why kind of marketing you do.
Be It Twittering or Blogging, It’s All About Marketing – Question – NYTimes.com reports:
“Q.-What type of business person can benefit from Internet-based promotion?
A.-Every type. You just have to be you. Social networking means virtual handshaking, working the room. You connect with people instead of giving presentations. I work countless 18-hour days, answer 1,000 e-mails a day. People feel the authenticity. It’s a very different, very transparent game now.”
I enjoy blogging as a marketing tool; I also use press releases.
