I’ve been using Tarot as a creativity tool for many years, since the 1980s. Why? Because Tarot kick starts your brain, and it’s huge fun. Tarot is a way of communicating with your right brain, which “thinks” in images.
As well as using Tarot as a general creativity tool, I often use it to give me insights into what I’m currently writing. It’s ideal for those times when you’re stuck on a project, or when you know a project needs something more, but you feel brain dead.
At those times, I just shuffle a Tarot deck face up so I can see the images (any deck works for this), and clear my mind. Then I choose three cards at random, and write a short, 100-word story about them. This whole process takes around 15 minutes, and it’s never failed me. I always get great results.
You can try this simple process yourself. BTW, you don’t need to know anything about the cards or the card “meanings” for this to work — you’re just writing a story, based on the cards, so you can’t do it incorrectly, or make a mistake.
Given my deep affection for the cards, when I heard that someone had written a book called Tarot for Writers, I had to order it.
Here’s a review, “An Amazing Resource” « Shuffle | Corrine Kenner’s Tarot Blog:
“This book is very timely. Tarot and writing seem to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds lately as well as in the news. Just this past year, the new National Poet Laurate, Kay Ryan, mentioned that she used a deck of Tarot cards to learn to write poetry. Many Tarot readers I know focus their talents on assisting writers who have creative blocks, or are looking for insight or inspiration for a writing project. The use of Tarot has expanded past its historical uses as a tool of fortunetelling into a tool of self-help, therapy and now creative inspiration.”
My copy should arrive in the next week or two; expect a review from me when it does.
And DO try Tarot yourself — it will do wonders for your imagination and creativity.
