Getting hired for a writing job: be careful

by angela.booth on December 24, 2008

Here’s a big tip to help you in getting writing jobs (or any kind of job, for that matter): tidy up your public persona.

I read lots of writing blogs, and some of them make me cringe. The posts are packed with whining and complaints. If I were considering a whining blogger for any kind of writing gig, I wouldn’t offer the complainer a book contract or an article contract — or anything at all. Whining on your blog shows that you’re a high maintenance individual, and will most likely commit the cardinal professional writing sin: you’ll argue with an editor.

Read this very funny post, it gives great advice. Saul Colt – The Smartest Man in the World!: A few things to try if you happen to get fired/laid off this holiday season says:

“Without finding these pictures I probably wouldn’t have asked the type of questions I did and therefor not gotten the answers I needed to make the decision I did. Basically, you never know who is interviewing you and how they prep for meeting you. “

And then go and tidy up your blog if you need to: it could make all the difference in your writing career.
