To get copywriting jobs, you need to provide some evidence that you can write persuasively. Copywriting is a huge field, so start by deciding the area of copywriting in which you want to work. (If you can, take a copywriting course — this is the fastest way to get started.)
Many new copywriters choose Web copywriting: writing sales letters, product copy, and Web site copy. However, because of the competition online, it’s best to start offline, and target local businesses. You local competition is much lower; indeed many businesses in your local area may never have been approached by a copywriter.
Let’s look at how you can get started, in four steps.
1. Create Some Copywriting Samples
Your first step is to create some copywriting samples. These can be simple. I often recommend that my students develop a series of advertisements and a news release for their own new business, and for local businesses as well.
Here’s what your prospective clients are looking for: a friendly, professional attitude; good language skills (yes, spelling and grammar count); and an understanding of how to persuade via your copy.
No, they’re not looking for clever “creative” copy. They’re looking for someone who can persuade, and sell, using words.
2. Make Some Phone Calls over the Next Week
With your samples in hand, make some phone calls to local businesses. If you make 100 calls, you’ll get copywriting work. It’s as simple as that.
3. Start Writing!
Got your first copywriting job? Excellent! Your first job is the key to a highly profitable career, so get it done, before your deadline.
4. Ask for Testimonials
When the job is completed to the client’s satisfaction, ask for a testimonial. As an unknown copywriter, testimonials from clients who’ve used your services are essential.
Often clients are busy, so the easiest way to get your testimonial is over the phone. Just ask: “What would you say about my services? Would you say that you’re pleased with them?”
