If you’re a new writer…

If you’re a new writer, here are my best three writing-for-profit tips based on 30 years of professional writing, and 20 years of teaching writers to make money. I promise that if you take these three tips to heart, you’ll achieve a high-income professional writing career FAST.

1. You’re a better writer than you think you are.
With the explosive growth of the Web, if you can write an email message which gets a response (any response) you can make money. Stop worrying about whether you can make money (you can) and whether you have talent (talent and $4 will buy you a cup of coffee), and WRITE.

Your skills will improve as you write, with each day that passes.

2. Learn ONE form of writing at a time.
You can make money writing articles, copywriting, blogging, writing and selling ebooks… Choose. Learn that form of writing, and don’t worry about anything else until you’re making money at it. If you try to do everything at once, you’ll get nowhere.

3. The buyers of writing are intimidated by you, so please communicate with them.
New writers worry too much about their buyers. Over time, you’ll realize that they’re more intimidated by you than you are by them. Communicate. Chat. They don’t bite: relax, and enjoy working with your buyers.

Keep your word, and your deadlines. Before you know it, your buyers will become raging fans of your writing. To people who don’t write every day, writing is a magical skill.
