Freelance Writing: Get Ideas for Articles for Easy Profits

Want to make some quick cash? Writing articles is a great way to make a freelance income, but you need to be a master at creating ideas. Let’s look at four ways you can get ideas for a constant flow of articles.

I’ve been writing for around three decades. Here’s what I’ve discovered about writing for money: the more ideas you can develop, the more money you make. Therefore, I spend several hours every Sunday generating ideas for articles and other material for the week ahead.

Ideas are vital. Here are four ways to create a constant flow of great ideas.

1. Look Through a Stash of Magazines

I get lots of ideas from magazines, but not from the articles: I get them from the ads and the letters to the editor. I commend this process to you, too. Read the ads.

Before advertisers spend many thousands of dollars on advertising, they commission research. When you read the ads and think about them, you’ll discover what’s important to readers of the magazine.

Not only does this process help you to sell articles to magazines, it helps you to sell articles to Web sites too.

2. What Challenges Do Friends and Colleagues Have?

Do you enjoy gossip? If you do, take out your notebook and a pen the next time you and your friends sit down together for a chat.

3. Visit the Bookstore to See What’s Selling

Your local bookstore is also a great source of ideas. Make a note of which books the store is promoting heavily. Publishers pay for promotion of certain books, so if they’re spending money in an area, it’s a clue to what people are interested in right now.

4. Learn Something New, and Write About It

Here’s the easiest tip: use your own life. Whenever you learn something new, write about it.

If you’re buying a new computer, write about what you learn. If your car breaks down, write about your experience with repairers. Redecorating? Excellent — you’ll get lots of ideas for articles from that.

When you’re a writer, your entire life is a source of articles, so you’ll never run out of ideas.

Remember: ideas equal income. Generating ideas is lots of fun, and it’s profitable too.
