This blog is all about making money writing. (Read more about this blog here.) It’s not for “creative writers”, although I do hope that you’ll be VERY creative because creativity is a given for commercial writers.
So if you’re a new writer, welcome to the world of commerce… and writing.
Let’s look at where you’ll start.
My advice: start anywhere. A couple of decades ago, you started by sending out your writing for years with little effect. You knew you’d have many rejection slips before you sold anything at all. If you wanted to write for money, you just had to accept that that was the way things worked.
These days, with the Web hungry for words, just about anyone with a pulse can write for money. This is more a good thing than a bad thing. The good part is that you get paid. The bad part is that you may develop bad habits which can be hard to eradicate.
Get your first paid writing jobs wherever you can. One thing you’ll learn quickly is that every writing job is different. And each job, no matter how poorly paid, will teach you something.
Once you have writing credits, you can get writing jobs which pay more.
But in the beginning, start anywhere.
Big tip: get your own Web site, and build the site out. Marketing is essential for every writer, whether you’re completely new, or are established. So get a site, and then get another one.
Welcome to the wonderful world of commercial writing.
