Copywriting essentials for freelance writers — it’s not brain surgery

All freelance writers need to know the basics of copywriting. Why? Because you must promote yourself and your writing if you want to have a successful career.

For example, writing an article query is a copywriting job, and so is writing a book proposal. In both instances, you’re trying to persuade someone to buy your writing.

Copywriting isn’t brain surgery

Are you intimidated at the thought of writing copy? Trust me, it’s not complicated. You’ve been surrounded by marketing your entire life, so it’s just a matter of switching your mind set.

I’ve always found writing copy fun, and you can too, when you think about what you’re writing and why.

Here’s a beginner’s guide to writing copy

Here are four questions to ask yourself when you’re writing a piece of marketing material for your writing.

1. Who’s it for?

Ask yourself what your audience is for a piece of copy. In a magazine query for example, you’d make a note of the magazine’s audience. A mass market women’s magazine’s audience is very different from a tech magazine’s audience. (Tip: read the magazine before you query; focus on the advertising as well as the articles.)

2. How do they benefit?

Make a list of benefits of the product. In the case of an article query, for example, you’d make a list of benefits of your published article to the magazine’s readers.

3. What’s the response?

That is, what response do you want to a piece of copy? In the magazine query, you’d want the editor to call you and commission you to write the article. You should also ask yourself how you want readers to respond to the completed article.

4. What’s the emotional trigger?

Every piece of copy is created to get a response, because people will only respond when their emotions are aroused. In an article query, you can usually arouse an emotion by using a short anecdote.

So there you go — the beginners (very) short guide to writing copy. Once you get used to asking these questions, you’ll make many more sales of your writing.

Are you making enough money writing?

Or is your writing just a hobby, costing you more in computers, Internet connection fees and writing supplies than you’re earning?
