Your next writing project – beware

Starting a new writing project on the Web which you hope will make you money? If you’re creating a new site or ebook or similar project, be careful which areas you choose.

I’ve just read Aaron Wall’s excellent article, Are You An Innovator, Immitator, or Idiot? : SEO Book.com which makes a lot of sense.

He points out the pitfalls of being a follower, viz:

“Ever heard popular bloggers sharing a little ‘secret’ with tens of thousands of anonymous readers? ‘I made my money easily – just get into X’.

By the time anyone is sharing that sort of information, the market has peaked. The horse has bolted, run across the field, got on a plane, and sent back the picture postcard.

Why would someone create more competition for themselves? They wouldn’t.”

Do your own research. No one shares their primary money-making secrets online, and you shouldn’t either, as I point out in the Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON) FAQ.

Yes, you can choose topics which are very popular (making money, goal setting, any and all forms of self help) but ensure that you give the topic a twist. If you create a “Me Too” product, you’re asking for failure.
