The real benefit of blogging for writers

by angela.booth on October 13, 2008

Can there be a single writer alive who doubts the worth of blogging for a writing career?

Judging from my Inbox, there are many writers who just don’t “get” blogging.

Their biggest quibble: “Why should I write for free?”

The response to this of course is – YOU SHOULD NEVER WRITE FOR FREE. However, if the only writing you do has a pay check at the end of it, there’s a big problem.

It means that your writing will always be directed by someone else. If it is, you’re limited by what they’re willing to pay you.

As I said in “Sell your Writing – See It, Write It, Sell It”:

Last week a young blogger sold his blog for $15 million. He’s in his early twenties, and isn’t a long-time blogger. His blog is quite new.

This shows you that if you have a great idea, and put the idea out into the world, you can make money.

A blog lets you test ideas – some of them will be bombs, others will take off

As a writer, you soon realize that there’s no one who’s responsible for you. You’re responsible for your writing, and the income you make. If you aspire to a champagne and caviar lifestyle as a writer, you need to be willing to take (minimal) risks.

Blogging lets you test ideas. Six years ago blogging showed up on my radar. I created a Blogger blog. At the time, I said to my sister: “I don’t know why I’m doing this. Something is nudging me in this direction.”

So I followed my instincts and created my first blog. That blog taught me a lot, and so has every blog I’ve created since then.

Essentially, every blog has allowed me to test ideas. This has saved me time and helped to increase my income. These days when I get an idea, the first thing I do is create a blog to test the idea.

That’s the real benefit of blogging for writers: you can test ideas. Who knows, your own personal million-dollar pay day may be just a blog away.

You can get paid to blog. The current rate for experienced bloggers is around $1,000 to $1500 a week for from two to five posts a day – VERY nice writing income.

Find out how to blog with the blogging best-seller “Blogging For Dollars: How to become a career blogger — in your PJs, if you want”. It’s my complete new ebook package, with free coaching/ consultations as well.
