I’m not a fan of “pay per post” blogging; it’s way too much work because you don’t own the words you write.
When you blog per post for someone else you lose the rights to your words. I believe in keeping the rights to my own words, and you should too.
How Much Do Top Tier Bloggers and Social Media Consultants Get Paid? We Asked Them! – ReadWriteWeb reports:
“Most people who are paid to blog are paid per post. What kinds of rates are our respondents seeing? The low end of the scale was $10 per post for very short posts. Almost everyone else said they were paid $25 per post. One person said they were paid $80 per post! One respondent said they were paid $200 per item of long-form writing; bloggers often do other kinds of writing as well.”
That’s the top tier of pay per post bloggers, so what are the others being paid? I’m too scared to ask, frankly.
My advice: write your own blogs, so you keep your words
Remember that pay per post blogging is blogging for someone else. The company you blog for has to make a profit, which is fair enough.
However, consistent blogging at a level of several posts a day is hard work, as is all writing when you’re serious about it. Eventually, the well runs dry, and your creativity flags.
If you’re currently blogging per post for someone else, develop your own blog.
Your words remain your own, you can monetize the blog, and when you get tired of it, you can sell the blog. You’re building a business; you’re not trading your hours for dollars.
So please, blog for real – you’ll get much more out of your blogging.
The biggest benefit of striding out on your own? You’ll LEARN about how blogging works and how the Web works. Ultimately that experience turns into big money.
Clarification – I’m NOT talking about the Pay Per Post company or similar
I’ve had some messages talking about the Pay Per Post company and similar sites.
THAT’S NOT WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT IN THIS POST. I’m talking about contract blogging, where you get paid per post.
Example, $1000 a week for five posts a day and couple of longer posts each week.
If you’re being paid to blog per post to advertise a product or service, good for you, but I consider that to be straight marketing: it has nothing to do with blogging.
