Can you make money writing short stories?

by angela.booth on September 14, 2008

An ezine subscriber asks: “Can you make money freelancing short stories?”

Answer: Unfortunately there are few markets nowadays for short stories. Some mass market magazines do publish short stories, but they’re usually by “name” writers.

The golden age of short story writing was prior to the rise of TV as a storytelling medium, that is, in the 1950s and earlier.

If you love writing stories, get your own Web site and publish them there. You can sell collections of your stories, and advertising on your site, which will bring in an income.
