Writing – What It Takes to Be Successful

Over the past 30 years – 20 of them spent teaching writers – I’ve discovered what it takes to be successful at the craft, and it’s very simple.

Writers write. Or put another way, a writer is someone who writes.

To be a successful writer, that’s about all it takes. Just writing. Everything else flows from that.

Writing is not glamorous, and while it’s not hard physical labor either, it does take a toll on your body. You spend hours sitting at a desk every day. Your rear end becomes numb. If the writing life is for you, you won’t mind this.

Each week, I get several email messages every day which start by saying, “I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and…”

The only possible response is “Just sit down at your desk. Start writing and keep writing.”

There’s no secret to writing, and nothing else is required: you need to write. This is as true for Stephen King and bestselling writers as it was for Charles Dickens, Leo Tolstoy… and you.

When you begin writing, your reach may exceed your grasp, and that’s a good thing. You need to have vision for your writing. Your dreams will keep you writing.

Defining Success – What Does It Mean to You?

Being successful at your writing will mean different things to you at various stages of your life. When I started writing, success meant sales. Nowadays, success means readers and sales.

In 2008, it’s laughably easy to make money writing online. If you can string a sentence together, you can make money. So these days you don’t need to starve in a garret for your craft, although you nevertheless still need to learn that craft.

The better you get at the craft, the more opportunities will arise for you. ALL of the opportunities you’re given result from the time you spend writing and only from that.

When I started writing, you found opportunities by sending your writing to editors and agents. Nowadays, you’re much luckier. The people who buy your writing can find you via your Web site and blog.

Now you know what it takes to be a successful writer – writing. So get started. Write every day. Success is closer than you can imagine.
