What’s your freelance writing niche (specialty)? Knowing your niche means you’ll sell more because there’s less competition and your clients look on you as an expert.
So how do you discover your niche? It’s simple.
If you’re already selling your writing, look at your last five clients. What did they buy from you? That’s your niche.
If you’re a new writer, write down, in a sentence, what you’re most interested in writing about. That’s your niche, when and if you start making sales. If you never make sales in this niche, it’s not for you. Pick another.
Writing in Your Niche Is Easy and Fun for You
Over the years, I’ve written in many niches. My long-time magazine niche is writing about PC shareware; I’ve written about shareware for computer magazines every month for 15 years. In copywriting, my niche is writing for heavy equipment companies.
A key characteristic of a niche is that it’s easy for you – people approach you to write for them, you don’t need to go hunting for writing jobs. Another characteristic is that you enjoy writing in the niche – it’s effortless.
You can turn just about any subject area into a niche. When you’re looking for a niche, look at what’s happening in your life. When you use your life circumstances, much of the research is done for you, because you’re living it.
A couple of my writing students discovered their niches in unlikely places – in their personal tragedies.
In 2004, Lauren suffered three tragedies. Not only did her husband die, leaving her a widow with three children under ten, both her parents died too. She was hospitalized for clinical depression. Her recovery started when she began writing about grief and depression; not only did these topics become her niches, she’s convinced that the writing helped her to recover and gave her the strength to raise her children alone.
In 1998, Bill discovered that he had cancer. He’s convinced that helping others with their cancer battles helped him. He started a support group for cancer patients in his city, and wrote about his experiences. He’s a surviver, and now his niche is health copywriting.
Finding a niche, and becoming well known for writing in that niche gives you an anchor. It means that you’re offered steady writing jobs, and that your clients come to you, because they look on you as an expert.
Discover your niche – you’ll sell more of your writing.
