Want to write a book or a Web site? Writing any large project takes time and commitment. Discover how you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible, with the big rocks and little pebbles method of time management.
A Long Project Is a Big Rock, but There’s Room for It in Your Life
Many writers put off long projects. If you’ve ever said that you’ll write your book:
* When you retire…
* When the kids are older…
* When you have more time…
You can stop putting it off, and start writing today, when you discover big rocks and little pebbles.
Imagine a mason jar. This jar symbolizes all the time you have available each day. Imagine placing a large rock into the jar – this is your long writing project. Add another rock or two – this is your day job, or other major tasks. Then fill the rest of the jar with little pebbles – the pebbles are all the other commitments you have.
The idea behind big rocks and little pebbles is that the big rocks go into your time jar first. They have priority. If you don’t place your big rocks into your jar first, you’ll never been able to cram them in at all – your jar will fill with pebbles.
How Do You Currently Spend your Time?
Take a sheet of paper, and write each hour of the day you’re awake on a separate line, starting with the hour you wake up in the morning.
6 am
7 am
8 am
Beside the hour, write what you’re doing at that time, in pencil.
This is how your mason jar looks at the moment.
Now, using a pen, place your big rock.
How do you this is up to you. Let’s say you want to spend two hours a day on your writing project. Since you’re watching TV or surfing the Web between 9 pm and 11 pm, put the rock there. (You can do the other activities on the weekend.)
Or, perhaps you decide that you’ll get up an hour earlier each day, and will also write between 9 pm and 10 pm.
The big rocks and little pebbles method of time management is all about priorities. Until you assign “big rock” status to your long writing project, you can’t fit it into your life; but once you do, there’s all the time you need, because other activities just become little pebbles.
Are you making enough money writing?
Or is your writing just a hobby, costing you more in computers, Internet connection fees and writing supplies than you’re earning?
