Crunch… the Titanic hits the iceberg

Ouch. That crunching sound you can hear is the magazine Titanic hitting the advertising iceberg.

The Wooden Horse Magazine News reports:

Thanks to the new Rapid Report from the Audit Bureau of Circulations we can already get a sneak peek of 2008′s first half magazine sales – and it isn’t pretty:

O THE OPRAH MAGAZINE* – down 16.4%

TEEN VOGUE* – down 15.7%

VOGUE* – down 15.1%

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING* – down 13.7%

MARIE CLAIRE* – down 11.7%

When a magazine’s circulation drops, advertisers flee. And since lower ad spends means less editorial content, what does this mean for freelance writers?

In brief – get away from magazines. Run, don’t walk.
