Whether you’re a new writer, or are an experienced pro, affiliate marketing – selling products on commission, essentially – gives you another way to make money writing.
However, here’s an important tip: in affiliate marketing, many are called, but few are chosen, to mangle a Biblical phrase. What do I mean by this?
In affiliate marketing, as in all your writing, persistence and consistency counts. There’s more to selling products than slapping a couple of banner ads on your Web site and calling it a day.
You need to write content and review products, and build an audience for your site – once people trust you, they will buy on your recommendation. If you’re new to the concept of affiliate marketing, I recommend the Affiliate Classroom, it starts you on the right track.
How do you get started? The short answer, is sell something – and get the commission.
I cover affiliate marketing from a writer’s point of view in Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON), because it’s a great way for writers to make a good secondary income – which often grows to outstrip their primary writing income.
For example, a good friend spent ten years writing for magazines, and when she burned out on the celebrity claptrap she turned to full time affiliate marketing. She already had a couple of affiliate Web sites (one in the dating niche) making her a couple of thousand a month. She soon boosted that to $4,000 a month, and then $10,000. She says she’s happier than she’s ever been – she can write what she likes, and she believes in the products she’s selling.
One of the big benefits of affiliate marketing is that you don’t need your own products, you just sell others’ products, but over time, once you’ve got the knack of selling, and you’ve built a following to a site, you can create products yourself to appeal to that following.
I enjoy affiliate marketing because it’s a great way to write about topics I enjoy, and get paid for doing so, over and over again. Is it for you? Only you know that.
